Quick answer

Acrylic extensions add length using tips or a sculpting form, then an acrylic layer filed to shape. A full set usually takes 90 minutes to 3 hours. Plan infills every 2 to 3 weeks.

What an acrylic extension is

Acrylic is made by mixing a liquid monomer with a polymer powder. It hardens in the air into a strong layer that can be filed into any shape. The US FDA describes artificial nails as made mainly of acrylic polymers formed by reacting monomers with polymers.

Tips or sculpted

  • Tips: a plastic tip is glued to the free edge, then covered with acrylic. Quick and consistent.
  • Sculpted: acrylic is built on a form fitted under the nail. More custom, and usually takes longer.
  • Overlay: acrylic over your natural nail with no added length. Good if your nails are already long.

Length and shape

Short square looks neat and works for typing and housework. Coffin, almond and stiletto need more length. Some Nairobi menus price each length separately, so say what you want up front.

How long it takes

Published Nairobi menus list sets at roughly 90 minutes to 3 hours. Detailed art and extra length add time.

Protecting your natural nails

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that the natural nail is filed to help acrylic stick, which thins it. Ask your technician to skip cuticle cutting, keep filing light and book professional removal when you are done.

What it costs

Published Nairobi menus we checked show full sets from KSh 3,000 to KSh 8,000. See sources in the price guide.
