Acrylic is harder and holds length better. Gel is more flexible and dermatologists consider soak-off gel gentler on nails. Choose acrylic for length and shape, gel for colour on short nails.
| Factor | Acrylic | Gel |
|---|---|---|
| How it sets | Liquid and powder harden in the air | Cured under an LED or UV lamp |
| Feel | Hard and rigid | More flexible |
| Length | Holds long extensions well | Builder or hard gel needed for length |
| Removal | Filed and soaked in acetone | Soak-off gels come off with acetone |
| UV exposure | No lamp needed to set | Lamp exposure each time |
What dermatologists say
The American Academy of Dermatology suggests soak-off gel over acrylic to reduce damage, because gel is more flexible and your own nails are less likely to crack. It also recommends LED lamps over UV, and sunscreen or fingerless gloves during curing.
When acrylic makes sense
- You want real length or a dramatic shape like coffin.
- You are hard on your hands and want a rigid set.
- You want to avoid lamp exposure.
When gel makes sense
- You want colour on short natural nails.
- Your nails are thin and you want something more flexible.
Either way, removal matters most. Read our removal guide and see Nairobi prices.
